Humax Foxsat 500GB released

The Humax Foxsat HDR is now available with a 500Gb hardrive instead of 320gb. This means you can record even more of your favorite TV Shows. Only a select few retailers are able to stock the product, Amazon being one of them. The 500gb Humax Foxsat HDR retails at around £300. Amazon do seem to have some for as low as £269.

Remember that if you already have a 320gb hardrive you can still save additional programmes to an external hardrive or storage device. This is done through the media settings.

The HD Fox T2 is the first digital set top box for Freeview that receives High Definition TV. There will be a choice of 5 HD Channels (Sport, Drama, Kids, Wildlife and Films). Although the Humax Foxsat HDR has a whopping 320mb of memory it is quite easy to fill all the memory with all you favorite films and shows. If you want to still keep these programs and still record more TV you can save programmes to your PC or external hardrive.

To transfer files (TV Programmes etc), you connect a USB storage device such as a memory stick or a portable hardrive to the back of the Humax Foxsat HDR via the USB slot.

It is the Humax Foxsat HDR file manager that allows you to transfer files from the 320 gb Hardrive to the external USB device. You can then connect the external USB device to your PC and watch the programmes on your PC. Alternatively you could even save files (TV programmes) onto an external hardrive and watch them from there on your Humax Foxsat HDR.

If your PC won’t play the Humax Foxsat HDR recorded programmes you could try another media player such as VideoLan. This media player is free to download from www.vedeolan.org.

To watch Iplayer on the Humax Foxsat HDR or Humax Foxsat HD you first need to own one. To purchase click here.

You will also need an actual broadband speed of 1Mbps to watch BBC iPlayer, or 2Mbps to watch in high quality. Make sure you check your broadband speed is sufficient.

You'll need an Ethernet cable to connect your Humax Foxsat HDR to your router. Alternatively you can connect wirelessly with a home plug adapter.

Where to point the Satellite for receiving Freesat on your Humax Foxsat HDR: Point the dish at the Astra2A/B/D & the Eurobird1 satellites. These are in the same direction, 28.2E & 28.5E respectively. For full use of the Humax Foxsat HDR, i.e record, pause and rewind TV you'll need two cables from the LNB, which means a twin "universal" LNB - but you might wish to fit a quad (4-port) LNB for "future proofing". You might already have this if you’ve had Sky Plus. Otherwise ask your engineer to fit it.

Comment (14^th January 2010): This BBC iPlayer BETA version for the Humax HDR is truely fantastic. The help suggestion to link back to the iPlayer web site was very useful as I didn't realise you had to punch in the secret code to start the programme! Once I did that it worked immediately. Now I don't have to squint at a computer screen to watch programmes. Well Done BBC and Humax!

Terrabyte version of the Humax Foxsat HD-HDR: There are companies that have adapted the Humax Foxsat HDR to have increased memory. However please make sure that when you purchase your Humax Foxsat HDR you have a full warrantee with any adaptations that have been made to the product. All Humax Foxsat HDR’s that have been sold by Humax currently only have a 320 GB memory. The additional memory is also attracting a higher price (£400).

Humax Foxsat HRR Padding: Padding is the term for the overlap recording at the end of recording. This can cause a conflict. But I’ve noticed with my Humax Foxsat HDR it will just cut off the last few minutes of the overlap and record the new programmes from the start. So far this hasn’t caused too many problems.

Humax Foxsat HDR Resolution

Some people seem to be experiencing some problems with the resolution. If you need to change the resolution of the screen you can do so by pressing the V-Format button while watching a program. This will show the current resolution.

Each time you press the V-FORMAT button, the resolution changes in the following sequence:
576i; 576p; 720p; 1080i; Original.

Humax Foxsat HDR with IPlayer

For the Iplayer facility to work on your Humax Foxsat HDR you will need an internet connection. This will be the usual Cat 5 cable that is connected to your reouter.

The Humax Foxsat HDR doesn't currently have the Wii Fi facility but if your technically minded you could configure a spare router as a client bridge or wireless bridge. However proceed with caution and do not expect this method to work unless you know what your doing.

Ordinarily the Humax Foxsat HDR will pick up Iplayer once the internet cable is connected to the back of the Humax Foxsat HDR. All Humax Foxsat HDR's sold in the UK since November 2008 will have a Cat 5 cable connection at the back. You will not need to purchase a newer model.

Only a few of us have the Iplayer facility at the moment. This is because Humax are testing the software. Full roll out is expected shortly.

The Humax Foxsat HDR has already been subject to much review. Most people are very happy. However there are some issues with the remote control design.
