Freesat Humax Foxsat HDR

What does Freesat cost?

Freesat is a free service with no monthly subscription charge. The Humax Foxsat HDR 320GB pvr allows you to view and record the Freesat Channels in much the same way as the SKY HD + service. All you need is a satellite dish and two cables running from it. Your existing Sky satellite dish will work provided there are two cables connected to the Foxsat HDR.

Freesat's High Definition TV Service

Freesat currently broadcasts two High Definition channels. These are BBChd and ITVhd. T o enjoy the full wonder of HDTV from Freesat you will need a HD ready TV. These are widely available. The best quality on the market at the moment is the 1080p (p stands for progression). This will also allow you to watch Blue Ray DVD's at their best quality. To view ITVhd programmes the viewer selects the red button in the right hand corner of the television screen. A list of the current high definition TV programmes can be found on the BBC or ITV websites.

High Definition Television (HDTV)

HDTV (High Definition Television) is like looking through a window. Pictures are so clear that you can see blades of grass moving in the wind. Eastenders have had to build a new set because future episodes are to be filmed in HD. It's hard to explain what HDTV is without actually experiencing it. You could compare standard definition TV to playing a record, whilst HDTV is like listening to a CD. Or taking a picture with your old throw away camera could be compared to standard TV, whilst taking the same picture with your 10 mega pixel digital camera would be on a pa with HDTV. The difference in quality with HDTV is amazing.

Can I receive Freesat in countries outside the UK?

Yes, the Humax Foxsat HDR 320GB pvr can be used in other countries outside the UK such as France or Spain provided that the satellite dish is large enough to receive the signal.

Can I receive SKY's free channels with the Humax Foxsat HDR 320GB pvr?

Yes, if your sky subscription has ended your Sky card then becomes a Freesat card which can then be used with the Humax Foxsat HDR 320GB pvr CI-Module slot. Various retailers sell CI-modules. A CI-module will need to be purchased separately. The Freesat card will add the following FTV channels; Channel 4, Five, Five Life, Five US and Sky 3.

Why choose Freesat instead of standard TV received via a TV aerial?

Standard digital television is received via a television aerial and a digital set top box. There are plans in the future to broadcast high definition television through this method, but this won't happen until analogue TV is switched off. Even then, there will be less HD channels broadcast to TV aerials due to the increased bandwidth requirement. There are also more channels available with the Freesat service with over 200. More channels are added all the time. To get an up to date list check the Freesat website.

Freesat PVR, DTR, HDR:

Many DTR and DVD recorder models are labelled as either Freeview or Freesat+. There is a difference between the Freeview digital television service and Freesat Digital satellite television service. Freeview uses a digital television receiver through an aerial and Freesat is a digital satellite television received through a satellite dish. Freeview has quite a range of choice when it comes to recording, pausing and allowing you to record episodes of your favourite show at the touch of a button. However because Freesat is a relatively new service it only has a few options when it comes to recording. A freesat PVR will give you the same functionality of any previous television recorders or your existing Sky Plus digital recorder, but it will only receive "Freesat" channels. However there is plenty of choice with Freesat with over 200 channels to choose from. A definitive list of Freesat Channels can be viewed here. The choices for recording and pausing live TV are the Humax Foxsat HDR which was released last November, the Panasonic DVD recorder, the Panasonic Blue Ray DVD recorder (either 250gb or 500gb). Sagem are releasing their version from September which will come in either a 250gb or a 500gb version and Goodmans which is due for release at the moment can recorde up to 200 hours of high definition television. You can also buy television sets with a digital Freesat receiver encorporated within it. Your options are LG's LF7700 Freesat HD Series (32, 37, 42 inches), the Panasonic Full HD 1080p Digital LCD TV's (32, 37, 42 inches) and Panasonic Viera series. The functionality of these Freesat PVR boxes come with no subscription charges, which gives you great digital flexibility with no on-going costs. There is the initial cost of buying the Freesat PVR and the installation of the Satellite dish but this is a one off fee. Your existing Sky Satellite dish will work too, so you could save even more money by switching to a Freesat PVR. If you still think the option is too expensive perhaps you could consider one of the Argos buy now pay later options.
